Dating...Utah Style

This weekend a few friends and I had the opportunity to partake in an adventure! The adventure by name is….SPEED DATING! Yep, that’s right. For our Multi-Stake Activity we went speed dating. It was pretty entertaining. First sign that we live in Utah-WAY to many girls! They had long tables set up on the sides of the gym and they told the girls to sit on the insides of the tables and the boys to sit on the outsides of the tables. Well, the tables filled up with lots of girls, filling every seat. In the end Kristy and I sat at a round table at the end of the gym and the boys would rotate through. Now, on the boys’ side of the tables there at most 3 guys to a table of 4-5 girls. So it was one big poligadate! (P.S. My boss informed me today that he learned a new word from my status on Facebook. That word was nothing else but Poligadate, and he decided that it doesn’t sound very fun!) Kristy and I stuck together and for the most part it worked well for us. We were able to protect each other from MOST of the crazies. One snuck through at the end of the night though when as we were walking out of gym and into the foyer he chased after Kristy to ask her when they were going to carpool to Oregon together. Keep in mind that we had a. talked to a lot of boys that night and b. talked to this particular boy early in the night, so Kristy was having a hard time remembering who we talked to about what. She somewhat went along with this topic of conversation as the rest of our group stood back and just laughed! He went on to ask her who she liked better, him or his brother, who we had also apparently talked to. (If you say so!) She was very diplomatic I felt in her response of, “I liked you both the same.” His response… “Well, can I make out with you first, I don’t want sloppy seconds.” SAY WHAT?! Yep, that’s right, he doesn’t like sloppy seconds. Okay, first question in my mind is what girls are you dating that will a. date BOTH brothers and b. MAKE OUT with both? Second question, why do you think that Kristy is the kind of a girl?! Really??? You obviously didn’t pay attention when you were talking to her!

My last “date” of the evening was a young man who by commenting on how cold it’s been lately informed me that he’s a newspaper delivery boy and he never graduated high school, that he had his own house at 18, but lost it, and is now so far into debt and has so many bills that he can’t save up $65 to pay to take the GED test. Yep, that’s what the weather led to! Oh, but he would still like to take me out sometime…. Yeah, I don’t see that happening anytime soon. I almost wrote him a check to go take his GED test! He did, however, loudly announce that Kristy and I were BEAUTIFUL women, so point for him!

Our friend Jason who was also participating in the activity reported that all the girls were either Bonnie or Jen or Jenny! He did say that Kristy and I were the most “normal” ones of the bunch.

All I can do is look back at that evening and laugh. The joys of the life of a YSA….
